Moving into a new home can be a wonderful time of new beginnings. It can also be overwhelming. We know there are a million things to take care of during this transition. Packing. Moving. Unpacking. Switching utilities. Changing your mailing address on EVERYTHING. With so many tasks to accomplish, home buyers often overlook protecting their new property. Don’t worry – we’re looking out for you! We’ve made it easy by breaking down the 5 security goals to accomplish when moving into a new home.
Goal #1 - Perform a security audit.
Unfortunately, the home inspections many people rely on before purchasing their home don’t include home security. At NWOSS, we’re passionate about security and helping families stay safe. So, we designed a Home Security Audit to quickly walk you through a self-inspection of the security of your home.

Goal #2 - Change the locks.
Once you’ve closed on your new home, plan to change the locks on all exterior doors. This is a great time to assess the level of security and accessibility you want in your new door locks.
Spending a few extra dollars for a higher quality door lock can mean all the difference when it comes to burglary. Look for a sturdy, all-metal lock with a thick cylinder and drill-resistant plate. For even more security, consider investing in high-security locks that are unbeatable.
Upgrading to smart locks is another great option for exterior doors. Smart locks provide easy access for you, family, and friends. They add another level of convenience that many owners look for in home upgrades.
Goal #3 - Get help from security experts.
Contact your local security experts like Northwestern Ohio Security Systems for a professional evaluation of your home’s security. NWOSS offers FREE in-home consultations to perform a security inspection of your home.
During the consultation, one of our Residential Sales experts will meet with you to discuss your needs and budget. Based on that meeting, we will then design a security system customized for your home and family using high-quality, user-friendly products.
Then, our team of certified technicians will wire, connect, program, and test your new system. After we’ve installed your new home security system, our friendly technicians will walk you through all the functions and features, plus answer any questions you may have. Our goal is to make sure you feel comfortable and safe using your new equipment.
To give you peace of mind in the event of an alarm, the NWOSS Monitoring Team will dispatch emergency responders on your behalf 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (Why Choose Professional Alarm Monitoring?)
Goal #4 - Get to know your neighbors.
Did you know that statistics show that knowing your neighbors decreases crime in the area? My guess is it makes it easier to discuss disputes and recognize suspicious situations. That’s because good neighbors look out for each other and their property.
There are several great ways to meet the neighbors that go beyond knocking on doors:
-
- Join groups for your neighborhood on social media.
- Sign-up for your local Neighborhood Watch.
- See if your neighborhood is on the Nextdoor app.
- Look for upcoming community events posted on social media or at local shops/cafes.
Goal #5 - Prepare for emergencies.
Local Emergency Responders
If you’re new to the area then familiarize yourself with the names, locations, and contact details for your local emergency responders – fire department, police/sheriff department, and hospitals.
Life Safety Equipment
Inspect any life safety equipment that exists in your new house. Every floor should have at least one smoke detector and there should be one outside each bedroom area. Check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are not more than 10 years old. Test each device to make sure it functions properly. Install new devices to replace any missing, outdated, or faulty ones.
Create a Fire Escape Plan
-
- Identify two exits out of each room, including doors and windows.
- Check exits to make sure that everyone can easily open them.
- Clear objects blocking your escape routes, such as furniture.
- Confirm access to stairs or collapsible ladders at all upper floor exits.
- Designate a meeting place outside away from your home. Pick something easily identifiable at night, like a streetlight or a trusted neighbor’s home.
